Dupe Checker Help

Search Options

1 - "Case Sensitive Search": Enabling this makes Dupe Checker searches case sensitive. By default, Dupe Checker is not set to be case sensitive.

2 - "Treat Underscores as Spaces": Enabling this makes Dupe Checker treat all underscores, which looks like this "_", as a space when doing a search. This applies to the search term and the directory/file names. For example, the term "test_patch" would return a dupe match on a directory or file named "test patch".

3 - "Search Directory": The primary directory to search in. Dupe Checker will recursively search through all levels of subdirectories under this directory. For example, setting the base directory of a drive will make Dupe Checker search the entire drive. Use item 9 to set this easily.

4 - "Search More Than One Base Directory": Enabling this allows for multiple search directories. This also enables items 10, 11, and 12.

5 - "Report This Many Dupes": This is the max amount of dupes Dupe Checker will try to look for. Once it finds this many, it will stop searching.

6 - "Always show Dupe Checker's status in the status bar": Enabling this keeps the Dupe Checker entry in the statusbar visable all the time. The entry always has the DC logo and Dupe Checker's status next to it. Disabling this will enable item 7.

7 - "Seconds until result auto-clears (0 disables auto-clear)": Only enabled when item 6 is disabled. The number here is how many seconds the statusbar entry will stay before it disappears. This is useful if you don't want to always see Dupe Checker in the statusbar. If the value is set to 0, the statusbar entry will not go away when a check is complete.

8 - "Match Whole Word in Directories/Files Only": Enabling this makes Dupe Checker only return a dupe when the search term is found with no other letters next to it. For example, the search term "test" would return a dupe on the file called "test.html" and not return a dupe on the file called "testing.html". This is useful for short search terms that would normally return many dupes. **This option currently only works on ASCII English letters**

9 - "Set Search Directory": Clicking this button will bring up a directory selection prompt that fills in item 3 when you click OK. This is an easy way of setting item 3.

10 - "Clear List": Clicking this will clear the list of current extra search directories.

11 - "See List": Clicking this will show you the list of current extra search directories.

12 - "Add Directory": Clicking this will bring up a directory selection prompt. The directory you select will be added to the list once you click OK.

13 - "OK": Close box and apply any pending changes.

14 - "Help": Clicking this should bring you to this page.

15 - "Cancel": Close box and cancel any pending changes.

Cache Management

1 - "Cache file and directories/Cache only directories": This lets you choose between searching only directory names or directory and file names. Setting it to "Cache only directories" will result in faster checks.

2 - "Auto update cache every": This feature allows Dupe Checker to automaticly rebuild the cache based on however long you choose. Choices for this include setting it to "Off", "Day", "Week", and "Month". Off disables the auto cache feature. This feature is good to make sure the cache stays fresh.

3 - "Cache Statistics": Shows you various information about the cache file. This is good to make sure Dupe Checker is seeing as many things as it should be seeing. If item 1 is set to "Cache only directories" than the area "Files found" will say "Skipped" because it is only putting directories in the cache file.

4 - "Clear Dupe Checker Cache": This will delete Dupe Checker's cache file and reset scan flags. This is useful is something goes wrong with Dupe Checker and you need to reset its state.

5 - "OK": Close box and apply any pending changes.

6 - "Help": Clicking this should bring you to this page.

7 - "Cancel": Close box and cancel any pending changes.

Extended Status Box

1 - "Options": Brings up the preferences window. You can also reach the preferences through the Firefox extensions list under Tools.

2 - "Stop Check": Aborts the current check or cache building. The dupes found before it was stopped will be shown as normal. If this button is clicked during the building of the cache, then the cache will be thrown out. Dupe Checker doesn't currently resume where it stops.

3 - "Check Progress": How far into the cache the search has gone. If the dupe limit is reached before getting to the end, then the bar will fill to 100%.

4 - "# Dupes found": Show how many dupes have been found. This updates in real time as a check is run.

5 - "No dupes found...": If no dupes are found during a check, then this will tell you that. Otherwise it will show item 8,9,10,11 in its place.

6 - "Time since cache creation": Shows how old the cache file is. This also updates in real time.

7 - "Close": Closes out the extended status box.

-- Items 8,9,10,11 replace item 5 when a dupe is found and repeats for each dupe --

8 - File/Directory location: Shows the entire directory or file name that has been considered a dupe.

9 - Copy to Clipboard: Copies item 8 into the clipboard and shows an alert telling you that it did it. The alert is there to show that it went through, otherwise nothing would visably happen when you clicked on it.

10 - Open directory: Opens the directory or file listed in item 8. This options works in Windows and may or may not work in Linux or on a Mac. This needs more testing. A little more detail about how this works can be found here.

11 - Run file: Executes the file listed in item 8. This option disappears if Dupe Checker is set to "Cache only directories". This options works in Windows and may or may not work in Linux or on a Mac. This needs more testing. A little more detail about how this works can be found here. Users should be mindful of the filename listed in item 8 before clicking this because there currently is no confirmation prompt before the file is run.
