What is Dupe Checker?
Dupe Checker is a Firefox extension that allows users to compare text highlighted on the screen with directories and/or files on the computer. If one or more matches are found, then you can see them in a list in the extended status box. Once on the list, you can store the file/directory location in the clipboard, open the containing directory, or even run the file directly. Dupe Checker is designed to let you get to these specific files and directories without having to leave Firefox.

Why would I want to use Dupe Checker?
I originally made this extension to help myself save time by not redownloading things I already had. Despite my best attempts to organize my files, I still kept getting dupes. This extension lets me quickly and easily do a search before downloading. If I already have it, I can get into the directory or run the file without opening any other programs. It has already helped me avoid many dupes and find things I thought I didn't have. Just highlight the word and go.

How does Dupe Checker work?
Dupe Checker uses a cached listing, usually just called the cache, of all the things to search through. The cache is generated by searching deeper from the given base directory, or directories if you add more than one. Putting these into a list, rather than doing a live search each time, greatly increases performance and allows you to go through thousands of files quickly. To make sure the cache doesn't get too out of date, Dupe Checker will automatically rebuild it. The time between automatic rebuilds can be changed in the options or even turned off completely.

You can specify search rules in the options like treating underscores as spaces, searching for whole word only, etc. You can also set various display settings for the Dupe Checker entry in the statusbar. I'm always looking for more ideas to increase customization. If you have a suggestion, feel free to post it in the Feature Request forum.
